Commissioned by Mercer Art Gallery and Yorkshire Gardens Trust for the 2016 exhibition Noble Prospects, this film considers the varying fortunes of 6 of Capability Brown’s Yorkshire estates, from the well-preserved graciousness of Harewood and Scampston to the virtual obliteration of Whitley Beaumont. Glimpses of Burton Constable and Temple Newsam reveal the compromises with modernity involved in maintaining Brown’s spacious and illusionistic parklands. Hornby exists in its own time-warp, a treasure trove of 18th century and medieval features only now being explored by archaeologists.
